general   information
  • Inner   Line   Permit

Ladakh being a frontier area, certain areas are restricted for visitors. However, since 1994, new areas are open for tourist, but with an ‘Inner Line Permit’, which is available from DC office or arranged by a tour operator. All you need is a copy of your passport or identity card.
  • Acclimatization

Ladakh is a high altitude tourist destination. It is therefore advised that you acclimatize yourself to the altitude and its environment particularly if you land up in Leh by flight. Highl altitude sickness can occur to anyone at altitudes (approximately) above 3,000m (10,000ft). Its mild symptoms include headache, lethargy, dizziness, loss of sleep and appetite.
The altitude of various places of tourist attractions in Ladakh may vary from 2,500m to 5,000m or more. On Srinagar-Leh road, it has Zoji La (3529m), Namika La (3720m) and Fotu La (4094m). On Manali-Leh road it has several passes; Rothang La (3978m), Baralacha La (4950m), Nakee La (4950m), Lachung La (5065m) and Taglang La (5317m).
  • Weather   &   Climate of Ladakh

The altitude range causes wide variations in climate even within Ladakh. But in general, summer is short from June to August, with temp varying Max 25 to 30°C & Min around 15°C. Winter is chilling and long with temperature falling Max 5°C & Min -25°C. The spring and autumn are very short and cold too. It is because of this peculiar climate that Ladakh is often classified as Cold Desert.
  • Clothing

You may experience a scorching sun and chilling wind on the same day. Carry appropriate clothing and keep reserve of warmers. A little snack with sufficient water to last a day should be handy. A sun glass with some sun screen cream helps you in this heat. Sun block creams with a SPF factor of 50 or more only will help, especially if you are sensitive to UV. The so called autumn and spring are also relatively cold, if not freezing. If you arrive even in the month of May or September, you would love to have a heater in your room. Avoid LPG heating devices.
